In Lakewood, we take pride in our walkable neighborhoods, vibrant culture, and excellent public schools. Our schools are places where children discover who they are, where families connect, and where talented educators shape futures. They’re the foundation of a community that believes in opportunity, inclusion, and lifelong learning.
That’s why recent decisions by the Lakewood Board of Education — including the vote to close Lincoln Elementary and remove neighborhood Pre-K programs— have sparked community-wide concerns. Not because we don’t understand the challenges our district faces, but because the process lacked the transparency, planning, and collaboration that Lakewood families expect and deserve.
I truly believe that the School Board and the countless community members who oppose their vote have more shared values than differences. We all care deeply about our public schools and the fundamental impact they have on shaping Lakewood’s next generations. We all want what’s best for all of Lakewood. Where we differ is our vision for the future of Lakewood. The School Board has said that enrollment declines and population losses of the past will continue, despite recent data that suggests enrollment has stabilized and the fact that there are hundreds of new housing units under construction.
I believe that Lakewood is on a different trajectory. Cleveland continues to be a city on the rise, and inner ring suburbs (such as Lakewood) benefit from this upward path. Families want to live close to the world-class assets of Cleveland while still being able to send their kids to excellent public schools. We need School Board leadership that believes in a progressive vision for Lakewood.
On November 4, I encourage Lakewood residents to vote for Monica Bruaw and Katie Slife Rustad for Lakewood Board of Education. They see a brighter future for Lakewood and are committed to strategic planning, open dialogue, and robust community engagement. In addition to casting your vote on November 4, I invite you to sign the open letter to the Lakewood School Board at change.org calling for a renewed commitment to transparency and thoughtful decision-making.
We may not all agree on every detail, but we share a common goal: strong, inclusive schools that reflect the best of our diverse, thriving city. Let’s move forward together, Lakewood.
