Community Members Are Speaking Out During Month of Action!

We want to give a huge shout-out to several friends and neighbors who have answered the call in Preserve Lakewood Schools PAC’s “Month of Action” Campaign!  These neighbors showed their love for Lakewood and made their voice heard at recent events.  Please consider joining your friends and neighbors by speaking at a city council meeting, school board meeting, or just talking to your friends and neighbors about the issue in whatever way fits best for you.

Last night at City Council Bonnie delivered a very powerful message about the need for all of our elected leaders to speak on this topic.  Even if they are not on school board, we hope elected leaders across the city will recognize that the future of Lakewood is in large part driven by the future of our schools and children. You can watch her speech here.

Also last night, several people took the time to attend the school board meeting and share their thoughts on the school repurposing process:

  • Austin, who just moved his family to Lakewood this year specifically for the neighborhood schools, asked why no other options had been considered.  He also asked for the school board to delay this decision and allow voters to vote on new school board members in November.  Watch here.

  • Chelsea, who moved back to Lakewood to raise her family, spoke to the fact that the two schools being considered for closure (Lincoln and Grant) are the only two schools in Lakewood City School District that received a “5 Star” rating on the state report cards released last week. Watch here.

  • Emily spoke to the need for safer streets and a more walkable community, and highlighted how closing an elementary school would move us in the opposite direction.  Watch here.

  • Dan spoke on the need for more elected officials to address this topic publicly.  Watch here.

In these final weeks before Lakewood’s school board votes on whether or not to close and repurpose elementary schools on October 20, we want to keep the momentum going.
